I’ve been out with Jim on the Dogbar many times. He runs a fun, clean, safe and respectful charter operation and has one of the nicest (and newest) boats out of Gloucester.

Jim is a marine-veteran, a man of high-integrity and his crew is the same. They prioritize safety and are fishing professionals. That said, they also keep it light, everyone laughing and offer plenty of Cape-Ann personality and banter we all love.

He has extensive knowledge of fishing grounds and tactics, will put you on fish, and knows how to get them in the boat. Chances are you will also see whales, porpoises, and learn a great deal about these historic fishing grounds and Cape Ann.

Dogbar Charters is the real deal!! What an amazing experience!!! We got on the boat Sunday morning and set out to catch some bluefin tuna! We got into our spot. Filled up the bait box and got ready to hit the real action. The first rod bent over drag screaming, TUNA ON!!! We fought the first tuna just about an hour. Can’t even begin to describe the fight! More excitement from these powerful creatures than you’d ever imagine! Not long after we landed our first, the drag was screaming AGAIN!!! TUNA ON!!! I’ve known Jim Alvarez for almost 20 years.  Didn’t really start fishing with him until the last 3 seasons.  We really only managed to get out 2 or 3 times each year but our success rate has been phenomenal.  Through some hard work and shared Intel about what’s going on offshore, Jim and I have managed to put 6 Giants on the deck of his boat in the last 3 years.  He’s a personable Captain with great contacts throughout the fleet and will do his best to put you on the fish and get a Giant Bluefin off your bucket list. – Steve

 

Jim is a methodical, organized and charismatic captain. When we head out, he always has a solid game plan based on his long experience fishing around Cape Ann and the tuna talk around the fleet. He has consistently put me on the fish and I’ve been out with him over a dozen times. Jim has top of the line safety and fishing equipment and a very comfortable and clean boat.
